Proctor and Gamble introduced Bounty® as a replacement for Charmin® single-ply paper towels. At the time the Charmin® Paper Company became a member of the P&G family, companies made paper towels to be soft or strong. There was little mention of paper towel absorbency. That changed when Proctor & Gamble released Bounty® paper towels in 1971. The 2-ply paper product was thicker, softer, and more absorbent than any other brand.
