Afrin

Afrin is an over-the-counter nasal spray that can help relieve the symptoms of nasal congestion.

Afrin contains an ingredient called oxymetazoline, which helps to decrease the flow of fluid into the tissue and blood vessels of the nasal passageways. It also helps to open the airways to allow your nose to drain. All in all, Afrin is a nasal decongestant that is used as a spray rather than a pill, tablet, or liquid.

To use Afrin, simply hold the bottle with your thumb at the base and hold the nozzle between the first and second fingers. Push down on the rim with a firm, even stroke and sniff in deeply. Keep your head upright when using Afrin to ensure that it reaches the nasal passage.

Afrin gives you temporary relief of nasal congestion caused by the common cold, allergies, hay fever, and sinusitis. It is meant to help narrow the blood vessels in your nose to reduce congestion and swelling.

Afrin contains a topical decongestant called oxymetazoline which binds to the adrenergic receptors. This ingredient is used in the form of oxymetazoline hydrochloride. Afrin comes in a variety of formulas to treat specific symptoms, so read the ingredients carefully for more details.

Be sure to read the label on the packaging to determine the proper dosage and when to use Afrin. Most Afrin products may give you relief for up to 12 hours. Never exceed two doses in a 24-hour period, and avoid using the product for more than three consecutive days. Do not use Afrin more than every 10 to 12 hours, and don't exceed two doses in any 24-hour period.

Afrin is said to be safe to use through all three trimesters of pregnancy, however, it's best to talk to your doctor before you begin taking any new medications.

You may experience temporary side effects like sneezing, burning, or stinging in the nose. An increase in nasal discharge is common but not serious.
