What is vaginal discharge?

Most often, normal vaginal discharge is clear or milky white. It has a mild but not unpleasant odor. The fluids and mucous produced by the lining of the vagina and glands of the cervix keep the vagina lubricated and protected from infection.

If you experience changes in vaginal discharge such as those listed below, you might want to see a health care provider.

What symptoms can occur with changes in vaginal discharge?

When women notice unexpected changes in color, consistency, or odor they’re understandably concerned. Changes in this discharge can be an indication of a bacterial or fungal infection. Your health care provider may recommend a screening.

Vaginal discharge causes, symptoms and treatment

Changes in vaginal discharge can also be a sign of a sexually transmitted infection (STI, sometimes referred to as a sexually transmitted disease or STD). Many women have no idea they've been infected until they notice unexpected changes in vaginal secretions.

Some STIs that trigger changes in vaginal discharge include:

  • Trichomoniasis: This is caused by a protozoan parasite. It can cause a greenish or yellow vaginal discharge, discomfort and a fish-like odor
  • Chlamydia: This is a sexually transmitted bacteria that can cause yellow, greenish or cloudy vaginal discharge. Infected women may also experience urinary discomfort
  • Gonorrhea: Its symptoms can include increased vaginal discharge, painful urination and bleeding between periods. In women, the discharge can be white or take on a greenish hue.
