What causes swollen veins & leg pain?
Swollen veins and leg pain can be a sign of venous insufficiency, a condition that can occur when the veins in your legs cannot pump enough blood back up to your heart. This can cause fluid and blood to pool in your leg veins, which can lead to swelling, varicose veins (bulging veins), vein pain and other symptoms.
What are the symptoms of venous insufficiency?
Symptoms can vary depending on the extent of your venous insufficiency. Some people may only have mild pain and discomfort, while others may experience more severe symptoms. Some common venous insufficiency symptoms include:
- Swelling in your legs, ankles or feet
- Vein pain in legs
- Leg ulcers
- Warm skin and leg heaviness after standing for a long time
- Poor blood flow in your legs, which can lead to varicose veins and venous ulcers

Swollen veins and leg pain causes, symptoms and treatment
There are several factors that can increase your risk of venous insufficiency, including:
- Obesity
- Age
- Family history of venous insufficiency
- Pregnancy and childbirth
- Staying in the same position for extended periods of time, such as sitting or standing
- Inactivity
- History of blood clots
If a health care provider suspects venous insufficiency, they may refer you to a specialist for an ultrasound test to measure the pressure, speed and direction of blood flow in your leg veins.
There is no one-size-fits-all treatment for venous insufficiency. Treatment options may vary depending on the severity of your condition.
Some common venous insufficiency treatments include:
- Compression stockings: These tight stockings help improve blood flow and reduce swelling in your legs.
A MinuteClinic® provider may refer you to a specialist for other treatments including:
- Laser therapy: Endovenous thermal ablation, also called laser therapy, uses a laser to close venous valve openings. This minimally invasive procedure uses heat to block off the vein in superficial venous insufficiency.
- Sclerotherapy: This treatment involves injecting a special fluid into your veins to make them scar and collapse, leading to venous closure.
- Venous stenting: In this procedure, a metal coil or other device is inserted into the vein to keep it open.
If you are experiencing venous insufficiency symptoms, such as swelling, pain and heaviness in your legs, consider scheduling a MinuteClinic visit for evaluation. A MinuteClinic provider can help diagnose the extent of your venous insufficiency and recommend the best treatment options for you.
