What is blood pressure monitoring?

Blood pressure monitoring involves checking your blood pressure frequently over time. Your health care provider can tell you how often you might need monitoring.

At MinuteClinic®, a high blood pressure monitoring visit consists of taking your blood pressure using a blood pressure cuff.

High blood pressure monitoring causes, symptoms and treatment

High blood pressure is when the force of your blood against the walls of your arteries is too high and unhealthy. When this happens over a long period of time, it’s known as hypertension. High blood pressure can lead to health problems such as heart disease.

Your medical care professional will tell you how often you need to monitor your blood pressure and will tell you how to check it. You can visit a clinic like MinuteClinic for regular check-ups.

If your health care provider recommends that you do home blood-pressure readings, you should do so twice a day. Do this once in the morning and then in the evening. You should repeat this routine 2 to 3 times per week, or as recommended by your healthcare provider.

If your blood pressure is high, you may require additional testing to look at your cholesterol levels and how well your kidneys are working. Understanding these might help determine what treatment is best for you.

High blood pressure often does not have symptoms. Because of this, many people also leave this condition untreated. Going without treatment increases your risk of:

  • Angina (chest pain)
  • Erectile dysfunction in men and lower libido in women
  • Heart attack
  • Heart failure
  • Kidney disease or failure
  • Stroke
  • Vision loss
