Need to know more about depression screening? We’ve got you covered.

What is depression screening and medication management?

Depression is different from normal grief or sadness. Depression is a mood disorder that’s marked by a feeling of sadness, loss of interest and enjoyment in life. Depression affects thinking, feelings and behavior. A depression screening helps determine if someone is suffering from depression.

During a screening (testing), your health care provider may perform a physical exam. They may ask about your mood, feelings, sleep habits and any symptoms you’re experiencing. Your provider may also recommend a blood test to find any other health conditions (such as anemia or thyroid disease) that could be related to your symptoms.

If you’re diagnosed with depression, your health care provider can help with treatment.

What common symptoms can occur with depression?

  • Fatigue (tiredness)
  • Irritability or frustration
  • Loss of appetite
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in daily life
  • Restlessness
  • Sadness or grief
  • Sleep problems
  • Thoughts of suicide
  • Weight gain or loss

  5. At the end of your visit, you are provided with a visit summary, receipt and educational material about your diagnosis. At your request, we can send your primary care provider information about your visit.

Depression causes, symptoms and treatment

You should get a baseline screening if you’re experiencing common signs of depression or think you may have depression. If you’re diagnosed with depression, a provider may recommend monitoring at regular intervals.

There is no laboratory test that can diagnose depression. But your provider may order blood tests to identify any underlying medical conditions that are affecting your mood.
